Brazil Takes the Lead on Day Two of the IGFA Offshore World Championship

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - The team representing the XLVI Torneio Annual de Peixes de Bico of Brazil moved into the lead on Day Two of the 10th annual IGFA Offshore World Championship. The Brazilians, represented by Vicente Arruda, Gustavo Lima, Marco Antonio Oliveira Ribas and Chris Badsey scored four marlin releases on the day to bring their overall score to 1,800 points, enough to claim the lead going into Day Three of the event. And the new leaders weren't the only Brazilians making waves in the tournament.

At the end of Day Two, four teams sat tied with 1,500 points. The winners of the 2008 IGFA Offshore World Championship fell to second place since they were not able to put up any points on the day. Anglers Robert Collins, John Timura, Kenny Longaker, Scott Salley and Taylor Walsh released five striped marlin on Day One to score 1,500 points, enough to hold onto the second-place spot. However, three other teams were closing the gap and within close contention for the overall title.

The Bisbee Black and Blue team, including Doug Dunham, George Merziotis, Ricardo Orozco, Ken Dunham and Jorge Nunez added 900 points to their Day One score to move into third place with a total of 1,500 points. In fourth, also with 1,500 points was the 40th Torneio de Pesca Costeria thanks to four releases on the day worth 1,200 points. The Brazilian team of Evandro Soares, Nilo Cottini Filho, Nilo Cottini Neto, Gustavo Pustiglione Santos and Walter Muller Filho had an epic day and helped the Brazilian contingency take up a nice chunk of real estate on the leader board. Rounding out the top five were the anglers from Trinidad and Tobago. Sean Mendonca, Derrick Tardieu, Mark Vilain and Clint Quong Sing of the International Marlin Madness Game Fish Tournament scored two marlin releases on Day Two to bring their point total to 1,500.

Another Brazilian team, the Torneio De Marlin Azuo do Rio De Janeiro finished the day with 1,300 points as did the Bermuda Anglers Club International Light Tackle Tournament. With so many teams tied at the top of the leader board, the results of Day Three could really shake up the standings. A single fish might prove to be the deciding factor in who becomes the next Offshore World Champion.

The fleet released 50 marlin on Day Two, bringing the two-day total to

102 billfish overall. The IGFA Offshore World Championship represents the largest international field of competitors in the world of offshore sport fishing. The 43 teams participating in the event represent 19 countries. With such a wide international field of competitors, the Offshore World Championship has earned the title of the "Olympics" of offshore fishing.

For the first time in the history of the IGFA Offshore World Championship, the scoring is broadcast live online.
