SUGAR BAY RESORT AND SPA

FISHERMEN FRIENDLY

By Carol Bareuther

WYNDHAM SUGAR BAY RESORT & SPA – Host site of the Kick-Off Party & Awards Celebration for the 2007 USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament.

Perched atop a north shore hilltop and facing the ‘North Drop’, the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa figures prominently into St. Thomas’ sports fishing scene. Its located minutes from the east end marinas, offers attractive rates for sports fishermen and boasts a bevy of amenities to make visiting anglers feel welcome.

Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa offers 294 guest rooms, including 7 one-bedroom suites. These accommodations either overlook the lush tropical gardens and three inter-connecting fresh-water pools or the beautiful turquoise bay and ocean view. Each room or suite is comfortably appointed from its Caribbean-style pastel print furnishings to necessities like direct-dial telephone with dataport, high-speed internet access and in-room safe, as well as luxury touches such as satellite TV, refrigerators, marble bathrooms, and air conditioning as well as over-head ceiling fans.

On a lay day from fishing, anglers, friends and family members can enjoy daytime activities such as windsurfing, kayaking, snorkeling and windriding – all free on the all-inclusive plan, or other nautical pursuits such as renting a wave runner or booking a parasailing, scuba diving and water-skiing session.
Ladies will especially like the shopping tips meetings hosted regularly, in addition to bingo games, calypso dancersize and other fitness activities such as land and water aerobics and power walking. There are also all the amenities of Journeys Spa, a world-class, full-service spa and fitness center that was awarded the ‘Best Spa in the Virgin Islands’, by the Virgin Islands Daily News. The kids can join with resort staff on escapades such as coconut bowling, pool basketball, iguana feeding, and organized badminton, volleyball and basketball games down on the beach.

If you’re lucky on the seas – celebrate! If not – try your luck again. After sunset, the Ocean Club Gaming Center opens with 95 video slot machines and a full-service bar at your ready with whopper payout jackpots for those who can hit it big. Triple Sevens, Superpick Lotto, Blackjack and Poker are some of the games offered on the hot slots. While playing video slots, you'll enjoy the music of various local musicians playing a range from jazz to soca and calypso. The Ocean Club Gaming Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sundays from noon until 1 a.m.

By this point, you’ve likely made many friends at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa. But, another person to put on your list to meet is Food & Beverage Director, Scott Kenney – he’s a sports fisherman at heart.

“My fiancé and I were vacationing in Virgin Gorda last year and we just loved it here. So, I began looking for a job in the Virgin Islands and started work at Sugar Bay earlier this year.”

Most recently, Kenney lived in the Miami, Florida, area where he catered many events for clients on Fisher Island and fished with his clients and friends as well. “I’ve done a lot of the sailfish tournaments, as well as the Miami Billfish Tournament and tournaments over in the Bahamas,” he says.

Along the way, Kenney has fished with Capt. Bouncer Smith, aboard Bouncer’s Dusky 33, out of Miami, live-baiting for sailfish, dolphin, king mackerel, wahoo and blackfin tuna.

He’s also fished off Miami and the Bahamas aboard the Miss Britt, with Capt. Ray Rosher at the helm.

Kenney’s a fisherman who knows just how to cook fish.

“Most people think it’s difficult. But, the best way if grilled with a little lemon, lime, olive oil and seasonings,” he says.

Thankfully, fishermen staying at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa don’t have to cook their own. Just the opposite, just let Kenney know and resort guests are welcome to bring their catch of species such as dolphin (mahi-mahi), tuna and wahoo to the resorts foodservice department and chefs will cook that catch to request and pair it with a fabulous menu to make for an entire meal.

Don’t worry. If you get skunked for the day, you won’t go hungry. The resort takes the "all" in all-inclusive quite literally. You'll find that all meals (at any resort restaurant) and all beverages (including premium liquor and house wine) are included.

However, dining at the new Tuscany’s Restaurant and coffee shop Barista are not in the all-inclusive plan, but they are a ‘must’ to enjoy. A menu featuring a la carte Italian favorites for dinner compliments Tuscany’s formal, intimate atmosphere. The Barista is just the place for that cup of joe to get you going after a fishing marathon.

The Manor House Restaurant in the main lobby serves a full Caribbean breakfast buffet daily and for dinner the ambience shifts to fine dining in an intimate candlelit atmosphere, a la carte with display kitchen and soup and salad bar. Reservations are required and accepted from 7 a.m. to Noon daily.

If you don't feel like dressing for dinner, or lunch, head to the Mangrove Restaurant, the resort’s casual, contemporary poolside bistro. Here you’ll find flame-broiled specialties from the open grill or all-you-can-eat dinner buffets featuring different international themes each day of the week.

Finally, what’s special about being sports fishermen? Well, at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa, it will get you special savings. The ‘Fisherman’s Rate’ for this May, June and July is only $163 per night. In August and September, just in time for the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin (The ‘Boy Scout’ Tournament), the rate drops to $127 per night. These rates don’t include the 18% tax/tariff or $1 daily hotel marketing fee.
