Captain's Profile: Nicho Alvarenga

Hear it in his own words why Nicho Alvarenga, Captain of the Spindrift, loves fishing in Guatemala and working for Casa Vieja Lodge. It's the expertise of captains like Nicho that sets us apart and here is why.

"I have been fishing all my life and love it as much as I did when I was a child. I have been fishing for twenty years here in Guatemala as well as tournament fishing (billfish) in El Salvador, Nicaragua, North Carolina, Virginia Beach and Ocean City. My best day of fishing was here in Guatemala when we released 77 sailfish. Days like that is why I love fishing in Guatemala and makes it the best place in the world for billfishing."
- Capt. Nicho Alvarenga

Salt Water Sportsman Retreat

Recently we had the pleasure of hosting some of the staff from Salt Water Sportsman Magazine for their annual editorial retreat. On their way from the airport they first stopped in Antigua for some fine dining before making their way to the lodge for two days of meetings followed by two days of fishing. The meetings went well, but the fishing was even better! On the two days they fished on the Spindrift and Afinity the group had 9 blue marlin raises, 6 bites and released 4 blue marlin! On top of that they released 28 sailfish and put 18 yellowfin and 4 mahi-mahi in the fish box! The stellar fishing they had was more than just a fun, team building  experience, but also a great opportunity for photographer Bill Doster to capture some awesome video and photos.

"We look for a place where we can put those people, support staff and managers, in the heat of the action, for them to experience the magic and excitement that inspires the passion that drives our brands. Our group had a tremendous time at Casa Vieja--everything was great and your whole staff accommodated our somewhat erratic schedule as well. And we caught plenty of fish! Thanks so much for everything, to you and the whole crew. It' an impressive operation y'all have and we truly appreciate you working with us, and your top-flight hospitality."

Sailfish Strong

Despite it being the “slow” season for sailfishing, boats are still averaging 15 sailfish raises a day! On days when the sailfish aren’t quite cooperating the yellowfin have filled in for them. On June 29th the Pez Raton and Afinity caught 25 and 22 yellowfin respectively. Our boats are also running into some of the bigger yellowfin that we see in Guatemala, around 80 lbs, with one yellowfin caught that was estimated at 95 lbs.

Don't forget, there's still plenty of time to take advantage of the 15% off Summer Fishing deal on any billfishing trips during June - August. Summer is the best time of year for catching blue marlin and you can do it at a reduced price so reserve your dates now. Call to book today at 1-800-882-4665.

Remember, you can always find our daily fishing reports on our website HERE. Below are just a few highlights:
  • June 7 & 8 - The Afinity and Spindrift combined for 4 blue marlin releases, 28 sailfish releases, 18 yellowin tuna and 4 mahi-mahi!
  • June 26-28th Afinity raised 100 sailfish, had 73 bites and released 45 and added two blue marlin releases to top it off.
  • June 29th Afinity and Pez Raton caught 22 and 25 yellowfin respectively ranging from 30-80 lbs.
"Do it now. Sometimes later becomes never."
